The Honorable Carolyn B. Maloney, Founder & CEO of ERA NOW

At ERA NOW, our mission is clear: we aim to have the Equal Rights Amendment recognized by Congress as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. This pivotal step will eliminate any uncertainty regarding the ratification process and ensure constitutional equality for all.

ERA NOW is dedicated to achieving constitutional equality through the Equal Rights Amendment by building public support, driving legislative action, and defending equal rights for current and future generations.

After 30-years in Congress, the Honorable Carolyn Maloney retired with a reputation as one of the most effective Members of the House of Representatives by successfully having more than 80 laws passed, ones that she introduced and fought to put over the finish line. She is the ultimate ERA champion, throughout her service in the House of Representatives from 1993 to 2023 and today, which is why she established ERA NOW in 2024 - to develop and execute a winning strategy for Congress to recognize the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment.

The Equal Rights Amendment has met every constitutional requirement. It was passed by Congress in 1972 and ratified by the required 38 states by 2020. What remains is not legality, but courage - Congressional passage of a joint resolution. A willingness to affirm what is already true.

Everything women care most about - economic security, equal pay, educational opportunities, reproductive freedom, health care, personal safety, and more - rests on whether Congress finally affirms what the Constitution already promises. Under Article V of the Constitution, the ERA is law. What remains is the courage by Congress to say so.

The current ERA joint resolution states:
notwithstanding any time limit … [the ERA] is valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution, having been ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States.
As of January 1, 2026, all but 2 House Democrats are co-sponsors of the Joint Resolution and only 1 Republican.

Experts Agree
Constitutional scholars have made this plain: if Congress passes such a joint resolution affirming the ERA, no court—not even this Supreme Court—could credibly deny its status as the 28th Amendment

Sign4ERA was launched in 2023 as a national petition drive by our founder Carolyn Maloney and her students at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute part of Hunter College in New York City where she is a Leader in Residence.
Sign4ERA has steadily grown to over 150,000+ signatures across 50 states and 435 congressional districts declaring to their representative that they want Congress to remove ambiguity and delay – to affirm the ERA as the 28th Amendment.
Our goal is to be one million strong by Election Day 2026 and be ready for Congressional action in 2027 with pro-ERA leadership Congress.

More than 100 years ago, two women undertook an epic road trip in support of women’s suffrage. In 2026, ERA NOW and other supporting groups are determined to follow in their tracks in support of full constitutional equality. During March 2026, Women's History Month, ERA NOW will kick-off a 10,500-mile tour called Driving the Vote for Equality. We will travel from the east to west coasts starting and ending in New York City.

In 2019, the U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a strong resolution in support of the ERA that states: "...the U.S. Conference of Mayors pledges to support the Equal Rights Amendment and play an active role in ensuring its full ratification."
Mayors from across the county have added their names to the Sign4ERA national petition and helped bring attention to the importance of public education, grassroots activities and a Congressional Joint Resolution
